Area Information
Waxhaw takes its name from the historic Piedmont region called the Waxhaws, which in turn is named after the Native American tribe that once inhabited the region. The community that would eventually take the name "Waxhaw" as its own was first settled by European-Americans in the middle of the 18th century. They primarily became subsistence farmers and lived an independent lifestyle in those early days.
The town rapidly grew more prosperous after the railroad was brought through town in 1901, providing access to major markets such as Atlanta. These tracks still remain on a street through the center of town, now bordered by a strip of grassland that divides the rows of stores on each side.
Cotton mills became a force in Waxhaw in the late 19th century. The railroad helped provide a broad reach for the textile products produced here, and so cotton manufacturing continued to be important to Waxhaw through the 1940s.
Waxhaw is close to the location where gold was first discovered in the United States. The Howie Gold Mine is not far from the city limits.
Average high temperatures in Waxhaw climb to 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average low temperatures get down to 31 degrees in January.

The Club at Longview and Firethrone Country Club are a pair of 18-hole golf courses that offer enthusiasts the chance to hit the links without having to leave town.
